This study underscores the UK Chinese community's dependence upon informal support networks rather than upon formal networks, which may partly account for the mentioned underuse of official health and social support services by this community. Poor health and functioning appear linked to social support levels and a lower sense of social coherence, inclusion and regard from others. Social commitment appears connected to high social support rates, network extent, and contribution to others.
