Annotation

Social representations of European integration in history and civics school textbooks of five European countries (England, France, Germany, Sweden and Finland) are analyzed. European identity is seldom depicted as aim in itself, but mostly as tool to obtain power in a globalizing world or even as a menace. Despite educational Europeanization efforts, the European integration story is told from national viewpoints and textbooks are employed as nationalism conveyors.
