This paper asserts that gelotophobia needs to be explored in the context of linked variables (such as diffidence, embarassment-propensity and social anxiety), and research should concentrate on the time period in which this fear predominates. The pertinence of gelotophobia for humor theory, research and practice is underlined and new research areas are proposed such as the role of gelotophobia at work and in relation to life trajectories.
