This study of naturally occurring humor and laughter types in simulated, task-oriented, Japanese negotiations in conflict situations, unveils that this humor use can be accounted for by its suitability in relation to the implicitly fixed kuuki concept of a social situation, a concept ruling Japanese conversations in general.
