Annotation
L. contrasts two approaches to the study of linguistics, viz. the 'Nuts-and-Bolts' approach (read: formal grammar, such as transformational grammar), and the humanistic approach. L. argues for the latter, i.e. the approach in which language is studied, not for its own restricted sake, but for the sake of finding out what human beings are and do.
