This paper uses a pragmatic view to discuss the intricate interaction between context, prosody, intensity and politeness, with reference to various examples linked to Italian. Prosody is shown to play a major role in establishing politeness in its intensity variations under the impact of contextual parameters. The global effect though of a speech act in terms of politeness appears caused by the diversified interweaving between context, prosody and intensity.
