Annotation
Analysis of the use of the native Finnish politeness marker kiitos ‘thank you/please’, as compared to that of the borrowed politeness marker pliis (from English please), reveals that the former is roughly unaltered, whilst the latter is probably nativizing. Paramount is that pliis and kiitos are supplemental in their distribution; grammatically, pragmatically and in social distinctiveness terms. It is asserted that kiitos acts as negative politeness marker, and pliis as positive politeness marker. Pliss is mainly linked to young, urban women.
