Exploring pragmatic ITH (I think) functions from a language elasticity view (Zhang 2011), using naturally occurring data of institutional, frequently tension-prone Australian customs officers-passengers interactions, this paper shows the local and global elasticity of IHT as non-linear, multi-trajectory and overlapping, in reacting to various (sometimes problematic) communicative goals.
