Using Appraisal Theory, this study shows that whereas both Chinese and non-Chinese professionals display positive cooperative appraising behavior in their construction of intercultural e-mail request grounders, -elements that can act to construct solidarity whilst authorizing the request-, the non-Chinese professionals demonstrated a greater readiness to fit in than their Chinese counterparts.
