Annotation

This paper explores institutional changes of language-in-education programmes in Madrid, as related to broader socio-economic change, such as the Bridging Class (BC) programme, first carried out in 2003 to teach Spanish to migrant workers' children in state schools, and the newly applied Bilingual Schools Programme, enabling working-class background students to participate in global markets. The BC appears disreputed.
