This paper examines social and symbolic language facets in the accounts of Ghanaian migrant children to Italy at various levels: that of global power hierarchies as conveyed via language authority; that of the hopes for linguistic acculturation and maintenance; and that of youngsters' defying of adult rules via the instrumental practice of different languages.
