Annotation

Exploring presence or absence and positioning of problem statement and topic sentences in four series of argumentative texts written by three groups of university students, this paper reveals that Chinese students prefer a direct/deductive approach in both their English and Chinese writing, whereas native English writers favor an indirect/inductive approach. This study advocates a dynamic and ecological explanation of rhetorical practices in divergent languages and cultures.
