Annotation

This paper examines whether the contextualist approach to utterance interpretation, assuming “free” pragmatic enrichment processes, providing unarticulated components of the explicit utterance content, can explain in any principled way what pragmatically derived material regards explicit content, and what does not. It is argued that a derivational account could distinguish explicit content from implicatures, and deal with examples of claimed overgeneration.
