This case study on the grammaticalization process of a progressive periphrasis construction in the Italo-Romance dialect of Turin, triggered by the contact with Italian, may elucidate more general issues regarding the interaction of contact and variation in language change and the role of sociolinguistics in modeling contact-induced grammaticalization phenomena.
