Annotation

Their histories, and above all their structures, demonstrate that the hybrid Canadian languages Michif (French-Cree) and Chiac (French-English), are of a different linguistic class. Whereas Michif is a real Bilingual Mixed Language (Thomason, 1997), Chiac has not yet achieved independent language status and ought to be regarded more properly as a “fossilized mixed code” (Winford, 2003).
