This paper argues that diachronically, Louisiana French has to be considered a product of language mixing and dialect leveling. Two particular facets of modern English-French language contact elucidate peculiarities of the historic and current linguistic situation in Louisiana and the interest of some universal mechanisms of contact-provoked language change.
