Annotation

It is argued that Israeli audiences are inclined to consider interviewers’ use of irony in political interviews as slightly unkind, and thus as a potential threat to interviewees’ face (Goffman 1967), but also as a permitted and comprehensible tool, in particular when the irony co-occurs with humor or attenuating non-verbal signs. Interviewees’ conception of irony use is regarded as only a bit hostile.
