This ethnographic analysis of foreign language (learning) ideologies of members of the Japanese foreign language learning Hippo Family Club, explains the pragmatics of language use, and practices and results of socialization and shared social structures. Rather than assessing either the Hippo way of learning or the teaching methods they dissaprove of, this paper examines their ways of thinking about language.
