Annotation

Conceptualizing on- and off-stage as talk frames that act as context in this data set, this study argues that senior-junior hierarchical relationships among Japanese college students are not foregrounded during (club) on-stage talk, foregrounding participants’ club roles, but can be foregrounded during off-stage talk. The use of non-reciprocal speech styles engendering hierarchical identity construction is perceived in the latter situation.
