L. investigates some basic devices by which (Danish) interlocutors, during a conversation, signal to each other their intention of seizing, keeping or giving up the role of speaker or hearer, or by which they check or encourage the partner's participation. These devices are shown to be partly non-linguistic and partly linguistic. Discourse grammarians are criticized for ignoring interactional particles (of tags, reply, etc.).
