This study explores and compares the use of mitigation and indirectness devices in the institutional argumentative discourse of L2 Spanish learners and native Spanish speakers. Differences were observed in the repertoires of both groups of university students, but pragmatic breaches in the use of mitigation and indirect speech that harmfully impacted learners’ arguments were not discovered.
