Annotation

Based on video-recordings in Luxembourg and the US, this study discusses how student smiles in English Second and Foreign language classrooms index and solve interactional problems. Smiles and epistemic issues appear intricately interlinked and in the case of interactional problems connected to epistemic access, student smiles serve to preserve affiliation and to foster talk progressivity.
