This conversation analytic study examines how epistemic and deontic orientations are raised and made apposite in various types of patient responses to treatment proposals across two health care settings – New Zealand general practice consultations and Swedish hospital-based physician encounters. By exploring responses ranging from compliance to strong opposition, this study demonstrates patient practices for delaying and opposing medical authority, which covers claiming independent access to specialist knowledge and voicing daily, experientially grounded concerns.
