Annotation

This paper reconsiders the question of why Korean speakers switch between “polite” (yo) and “respectful” (supnita) styles in public speech. Analysis of a Korean talk show discloses that -supnita indexes a “formal presentational stance”. Affective meanings of yo are moderated by interactional particles and only indirectly indexed by this form when it emerges at variance with supnita in public speech.
