Annotation

This multiple corpora-based inquiry distinguishes four divergent pragmatic functions of the formulaic sequence just kidding and its variants in American English: protection against and repair of faulty humor, return to serious, and set-up of a novel joke. According to rapport management, it may serve as an important element of interlocutor rapport management. Just kidding turns out to be pragmatically dynamic and not merely a marker of defective humor.
