The proposed habit-based definition of conventionalization places it at the heart of im/politeness as a three-way connection between expressions, contexts and speakers. Conventionalized expressions are employed all else being equal, regardless of the level of face-threat and are the most covenient means of accomlishing im/politeness; departing from them may in- or decrease politeness.
