Annotation

This study addresses the notion of off-record requests (Brown and Levinson, 1987), -often labelled as hints and considered a kind of implicature in politeness research-, in Polish family interactions, where object transfer is instigated via hint-like utterances, which can function as a kind of communicative abridgment (Ervin-Tripp, 1976) or render an idea expanding over various turns as the interlocutors teamwise achieve a task, attending to others’ wants.
