Annotation

It is suggested that taking offence can be fruitfully explored and theorised as a form of social (inter)action (Haugh, 2015) and as pragmatic act, steadily situated with regard to specific activity types and interactional projects therein (Culpeper and Haugh, 2014). This position is exemplified by drawing on initial interactions amidst not formerly acquainted speakers of (American and Australian) English. It is suggested that ways in which taking offence are performed are both provided and confined by participants' obvious position to agreeability.
