This study deals with the planners uh and um in fictional language, where they are less ubiquitous and more marked than in spoken language. They may even function as stylistic devices as is demonstrated by a short analysis of their use in Douglas Adams’ mock science fiction novel The Hitchhikers’ Guide to the Galaxy.
