Annotation

The recent phenomenon of lexical cloning, discovered in a variety of Englishes like British, American, Canadian, Australian, New Zealand, and South African English, is most broadly employed in American English. Its usage is mainly confined to a specific, informal spoken English conversational register. Tokens of it in written English are mostly representations of unprompted spoken language. This short article describes lexical cloning in English, debates its context-dependency and sketches a neo-Gricean lexical pragmatic inquiry of it.
