This study in the pragmatics of narrative takes an outside-in approach to conversational stories. When the data come from natural everyday conversation, and the examined stories are only a few steps long rather than the expanded written literary fiction, it gets natural to behold stories as accomplishing (direct and indirect illocutionary) speech act functions.
