Annotation

A first-order metalanguage approach is used to examine how people talk about and execute mock politeness in informal, spontaneous conversations in a UK-based online forum. The inquiry demonstrates that both metalanguage and structure of mock polite behaviours are more varied than formerly predicted and thus this article pleads against evening mock politeness with sarcasm and invites further research into mock politeness as an essential impoliteness strategy.
