This conversation analytic study explores how speakers refer to events and memories they suppose to be shared by their interlocutors. By examining recognition checks with (do you) remember X in American English, the study concentrates on how remembering is provoked and how reference trouble is solved by participants in daily interaction. The study debates the role of epistemics as mirrored in the usage of recognition checks with remember to back claims, and to evoke understanding and confirmation from interlocutors.
