Annotation

This study on unnamed speakers in news discourse, based on the TV program CNN Newsroom for the year 2014, reveals that recipients may use various strategies for constructing the identity of unnamed participants. Furthermore, backed by the frameworks of evidentiality, Relevance Theory, and the Cooperative Principle, this study indicates that speaker non-identification performs some pragmatic functions, like generating suspense or declaring that speaker identity knowledge is needless for understanding.
