L. argues that (i) phatic communion serves to establish and consolidate the interpersonal relationship between two participants, (ii) it eases the transitions to and from interaction, (iii) it is a complex part of a ritual, highly skilled form of communicative behavior whose function is to facilitate the management of interpersonal relationships.
