This article examines how the strategic use of several linguistic variables in various instances of political talk from different politicians, renders different intimacy degrees with regard to a contextuality-formality continuum (Heylighen and Dewaele, 2002). These linguistic variables elicit two Aristotelian persuasion modes: pathos and ethos.
