Functional discrepancies in pragmatic force modifier use indicate that Chinese (versus native English) speaking lecturers strategically exploit the same linguistic tools for varied pragmatic aims to surmount language-linked uncertainty and attain communicative efficiency in an academic context in which English is employed as lingua franca.
