Annotation

This article discusses participants’ use of direct reported speech (DRS) (especially dialogues) in storytelling during French dinner conversations. In this specific case, DRS is employed both by the mother and the au pair as a way to define shared expectations concerning the fitness of a caregiver’s behavior in the face of a child's “aberrant” conduct, thereby reflexively building and parleying their linked epistemic prerogatives.
