This inquiry of invitation refusals (to a friend’s birthday party, a drink with a classmate, a talk given by a professor’s colleague) in Cameroon and Hexagonal French, reveals similarities as to the choice of face-saving refusal strategies. Many differences appear though regarding indirect refusal choices. Cameroonians are also inclined to generate more intricate utterances and to employ more relational address forms than the French.
