Contrary to widespread convictions that returnees are skilled and self-assured speakers of English, they suffer from fears linked to irrationally high “native-like” assumptions of their English back home. Participants are English-Korean translators and interpreters who stayed abroad for long periods of their youth in English immersion settings. In the present state linguistic uncertainty and perfectionism remain boosted by neoliberal discourses of individual responsibility.
