Annotation

Linguistic purity worries are frequently expressed in both academic and public debate, with the more blended Irish forms, generated amidst “new speakers”, oft disapproved. This paper examines to what degree new speakers of Irish internalise such discourses and whether or not they are building an identity as a separate social and linguistic group reflecting what it signifies to be a present-day Irish speaker.
