Annotation

This paper explores how new speakers of Basque, who acquired the language otherwise than via family transmission, consider and situate themselves regarding the commonly employed labels for “new” and “native” Basque speakers and the genuineness and legality ideologies that appear to mold these perceptions. Merely acquiring the language, even to an advanced proficiency level, does not warrant a self-perception as authentic Basque speakers.
