Annotation

This paper examines the intricate dynamics between “new” and traditional or native speakers of minority languages (MLs), to detect what communication impediment is caused by the (perceived) differences between them. These differences are explored from the viewpoint of the power differentials between various ML speakers/users in two language endangerment situations, viz. Breton and Yiddish. “Symbolic violence” reproduction, deriving from such differentials (cfr. Bourdieu, 1991), may hamper language revitalization projects and ways to overcome this are discussed.
