Annotation

The ideology of the ruling central Sudan elite is determined by Arabic as the medium of divine expression, and the knowledge and use of Arabic underlies their identity. People in and from Sudanese conflict zones have responded in diverse ways to this central stance on language and this is pivotal for the relation to South Sudan. Some language management facts are debated.
