Annotation
Drawing on Juan Antonio Alix's (1833–1918) décimas, including humorous mimicry of kreyòl speech and of Haitians' efforts to speak Spanish, this article reviews popular Dominican literature as metalinguistic documents, supposing they act as sites where frontiers between ethnic, cultural and racial connections are drawn via literary stylization, in order to elucidate Hispaniola's history of language policies and ideologies.
