Annotation

This paper explores students’ social literacy with regard to their reading literacy levels, and discloses that the literacy gap between indigenous South African language speakers,- several of whom are from low socio-economic status (SES) families-, and English and Afrikaans speakers, enlarges at the academic level, given the discrepancy between the social literacy practices of the various language groups and the country's educational system.
