This paper advocates a critical (urban) sociolinguistic framework, to address identity and power issues and linguistic change and conflicts in the new Marseille cityscape, marked by gentrification of space and speech, linked to the “new way” of speaking of a novel category of townies, the “neo-Marseillais”, defying local customs.
