Annotation
Danish, considered intercomprehensible for Norwegian and Swedish speakers, is taught as foreign language parallel to English in Iceland, to foster inter-Nordic communication. Inquiry shows that the proportion of Icelandic adolescents, understanding questions for directions to the Reykjavík Nordic House in Danish, Norwegian or Swedish, dropped from two thirds in 1983 to a bit less than 40% in 2006. Concurrently, the number (inclined to) switching to a response in English raised to about 80% in 2006.
