This paper explores the impact of gender, age and socio-economic status on Malaysian Chinese speakers' stances towards their ethnic Foochow and Hokkien languages and towards Mandarin. The findings denote different stereotypes of dialect and Mandarin speakers (with Foochow as rich and relaxed, and Hokkien as formal and solidary).
