Annotation

This paper tries to elucidate trends in Irish-medium education (IME) in the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland since 1920, as an example of minority language-medium education (MLME). The initiative for heritage language instruction appears to have moved from the state and other ‘official’ agents towards bottom-up agents like parents from the 1970s onward.
